Smiths Aerospace receives TSO and MD-11 certification for Flight Recorders

15 October 2001

The Model 3257A Series CVFDR is compliant to ED-55, ED-56A, TSO-C123a, and TSO-C124a requirements and fits the ARINC 747 and 757 form factors. The CVFDR performs both Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) functions, and meets all current FAA regulatory requirements, plus anticipated requirements for the next five years.  The recorder provides four channels of uncombined voice recording for 2 hours per channel. It has ARINC 429 interface capability with three inputs and one output for recording of Onboard Maintenance System, CNS/ATM Data Link, and Greenwich Mean Time data.  The FDR function records a minimum of 25 hours of flight data via an ARINC 717 interface with a maximum recording rate of 512 words/sec.   The CVFDR contains significant growth expansion for additional recording functions such as video, engine monitoring, and structural monitoring.  An optional integral PC card is available to support future Flight Operational Quality Assurance requirements. Smiths Aerospace is obtaining Supplemental Type Certification (STC) approvals for various civil aircraft platforms.

John Ferrie, President of Smiths Aerospace commented, "We are keen to grow our civil flight recorder business.  We have refocused much of our business by aircraft platforms and are able to bring together the entire integration package for our customers."

Smiths Aerospace is the leading transatlantic aerospace equipment company, with half its 12,000 staff and $2 billion revenues in North America. The Company holds key positions in the supply chains of all major military and civil aircraft and engine manufacturers and are world-leaders in electronic systems, actuation systems and precision components.
