Aviation Security Community continues to select IONSCAN® 400B

United States, Canada, and the Netherlands install IONSCAN® s

9 December 2002 - Warren, NJ - Smiths Detection recently received an order from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for approximately 500 more IONSCAN® 400B explosive trace detectors. Additional orders continue to come from aviation security agencies around the world including Canada and the Netherlands. In excess of 2,000 units have been purchased by the TSA to date and significantly more orders are anticipated. IONSCAN® deliveries are currently taking place.

Dr. John Ferrie, Group Managing Director of Smiths Aerospace commented, “Orders from agencies around the world display a continued support for our explosives trace detectors as an important part of aviation security.” These instruments will join the thousands of other IONSCAN®’s already deployed at numerous highly traveled airports, as part of an ongoing effort to enhance aviation security.

United States

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered a large quantity of IONSCAN®’s for deployment at airports throughout the United States; this is one in a series of orders Smiths Detection has received from the TSA in the past twelve months. Past installations, including those at Salt Lake City Airport for the 2002 Winter Olympics demonstrated the effectiveness of trace detection in screening baggage for explosive devices without compromising throughput.

Canada

The Canadian Aviation Transportation Security Administration (CATSA) has ordered additional IONSCAN® trace explosives detection systems for screening checked and carry-on baggage at various Canadian Airports. This contract, valued at US$ 3.5 million, follows the initial procurement by Transport Canada to enhance security at airports across Canada. The CATSA, a newly formed organization, has taken the responsibility for aviation security operations in Canada.
