Smiths Aerospace awarded LOSAT Actuation Systems

5 March 2002

Under the contract, Smiths Aerospace will design, qualify and deliver thirteen (13) systems by
September 2002. The units will be designed and manufactured at the Smiths Aerospace Actuation Systems facility in Whippany, New Jersey.

The Missile/Launch Pod Reloader System will provide ease of loading and unloading of the kinetic energy missile (KEM), which is a hit-to-kill weapon. Smiths Aerospace actuators and sub-systems will help ensure the success of this program. The new equipment will also offer Lockheed Martin greater reliability and serviceability in the field due to its modular design concept and singlehanded operation.

LOSAT is the United States Army's newest anti-tank program, with more than 170 production
systems planned during the 2006-2012 timeframe. Thirteen LOSAT "pre-production" units will be fielded to the 82nd Airborne beginning in 2003 for testing.

David Sapio, President of Smiths Aerospace Actuation Systems - Whippany, commented, "The
LOSAT win represents another integrated system win in support of the Army's trend to a highly
mobile fighting force and it bodes well for future growth in actuation systems technology".
LOSAT provides lethality overmatch against all projected armor threats. The concept is early entry into the 21st Century network-centric battlefield. The system consists of the KEM, the IBAS-based fire control system on an expanded capacity HMMWV and a wheeled re-supply vehicle. The system is fully transportable by C-17, C-130, C-141 and C-5 aircraft, along with the CH-47 Rotary Wing Aircraft and sling-loaded under the UH-60L helicopter in order to participate in the full spectrum of Army missions.

Smiths Aerospace is the leading transatlantic aerospace equipment company, with half its 12,000 staff and $2 billion revenues in North America. Smiths Aerospace holds key positions in the supply chains of all major military and civil aircraft and engine manufacturers and are world-leaders in electronic systems, actuation systems and precision components.
