Nato Purchases Chemical Warfare Detection Package from Smiths Detection

6 June 2003

Commenting on the order, Bill Mawer, managing director of Smiths Detection, said "We are delighted to have received this order, which continues the relationship we have developed over several years with NATO. It is a reward for our investment in technology and hardware development, to counter the ever-changing threat from chemical weapons. We were also able to meet the urgent delivery requirements, thanks to the flexibility of our Watford production facility".

About CAM

The CAM (Chemical Agent Monitor) has been in service for some 18 years and is now the chemical agent monitor of choice among some 33 countries and international organisations. It has been continuously updated and now is capable of detecting the presence of liquid CW agents and toxic industrial chemicals (TICS). CAM is an essential tool for dealing with decontamination and unmasking procedures and locating CW agents after their use. Both military and civil defence/emergency response units use it.

About GID-3

GID-3 is a stand-alone detector designed to be used either by dismounted units or those using vehicles. Some 25,000 GID-3 have now been produced and are in service in some 20 countries with both military and civil defence/emergency response units. GID-3 was designed to meet the requirement that emerged from Operation Desert Storm of providing rapid and effective warning of danger without false alarms. The design philosophy enabled GID-3 to win the US DOD ACADA competition. The design philosophy was the basis for its outstanding performance recently, during military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
