Smiths Awarded $100m Opportunity by Airbus For A380

"Smiths builds on it's solid reputation as a supplier to Airbus on the A340, manufacturing Trailing Edge components, and their unique capability to offer the best all-round solution for major structural components", said Dr. John Ferrie, Group Managing Director for Smiths Aerospace. "This further develops the relationship between the two companies and we are now working with Airbus toward developing the next A380 derivative programme requirements including the freighter version."

The A380 Mid Fixed Trailing Edge structural components interface with the Inner & Outer edges, Rear Spar and Upper and Lower panels to form a major part of the wing. All components are designed using the latest computer technology and manufacturing techniques, and utilise Smiths' investment in extended facilities including thin wall high speed machining and determinate assembly methods, to achieve the best possible component optimisation.

Smiths systems on the A380:

This is the seventh contract awarded to Smiths Aerospace on the A380, the new 555 seat aircraft for the 21 st Century. From 2006, when the first aircraft are delivered to the airlines, these contracts are expected to generate more than $1 billion for Smiths over the lifetime of the aircraft.

Smiths systems on the A380 include:

  • Landing gear extension and retraction system (Cheltenham, UK)

  • Landing gear actuation (Washington, US)

  • Air generation system actuators (New Jersey,
