Smiths Detection Receives first international orders for Bio Detection Instrument

24 April 2003

Bio-seeq is a hand held detection system designed for the scene of an incident where biological warfare agents, such as anthrax, are suspected to have been delivered. Up to six tests on separate substances can be carried out simultaneously with answers delivered within approximately 30 minutes and much quicker for higher concentrations.

About Bio-Seeq:

Bio-Seeq uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology, with samples of the suspect substance placed in special two piece reaction cartridges, which are then subjected to a PCR reaction and the results displayed in the instrument's display. The processes within the reaction cartridges also kill any dangerous bacteria as part of their operating process so once the outside of the reaction cartridges have been decontaminated the samples are perfectly safe to handle by unprotected personnel. Bio-Seeq also confirms to the operator that the correct PCR reaction has been carried out thus allowing an incident to be declared a hoax if no agent is present.   Normal life can thus be restored as quickly as possible with decisions being made at the scene of the incident.  PCR is recognised as an evidential quality analytical tool.  Data can be recorded by the Bio-Seeq and a port on the Bio-Seeq allows the data to be sent by modem to central laboratories for further analysis and recording.  The reaction cartridges and their contents can also be stored and used as evidence The special reaction cartridges contain all the necessary components of the PCR test and the processes to kill the bacteria thus helping to overcome the sample collection and preparation problems traditionally associated with PCR. Bio-Seeq will be an Authorized Thermal Cycler under license from Applied Biosystems, the exclusive licensee of Hoffmann-La Roche, owner of the basic PCR process and reagent patents.

About Smiths:

Smiths Detection and Smiths Heimann form the detection and security systems business of Smiths Aerospace. They are both world leaders in their markets - Smiths Detection in trace detection equipment for chemical & biological agents, explosives and narcotics; Smiths Heimann in x-ray security systems to detect illegal or hazardous items and explosives. Smiths Aerospace, a part of Smiths Group, is the leading transatlantic aerospace equipment company, with its 12,000 staff and $2bn revenues split equally between Europe and North America.
