The U.S. Army began the Up-armored High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheel Vehicle program in 1994. By 2003, approximately 3,500 vehicles had been up-armored and 7,850 were complete by the end of 2004. It is projected that by the year 2009, a minimum of 20,000 Humvee's will be equipped with the up-armor. Smiths Aerospace Humvee armor components include:
