Queen’s Award success for the Remote Interface Unit (RIU)

7 July 2006 – Cheltenham , United Kingdom – Smiths Aerospace has today received the Queen's Award for Enterprise – Innovation Category, from Lord Lieutenant Henry Elwes representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Accepting the award on behalf of Smiths Aerospace was Michael Jones, Cheltenham Site General Manager. The award ceremony took place today at Smiths Aerospace in Bishops Cleeve.

Dr. John Ferrie, President, Smiths Aerospace commented, "We are delighted and proud to receive the Queen's Award. Our world leading Remote Interface Unit is the result of focused investment in technology and the dedicated efforts of our most talented people.”

Smiths Aerospace wins the Award for the innovative Remote Interface Unit (RIU) Product Family. A range of products that offer incredible flexibility with the ability to convert real world signals like voltage, current and temperature into the language of today's computer data busses that are the central nervous system of a modern aircraft.

Critical to the success of the RIU product family is the way in which one design can be reused on many different aircraft and in different ways without having to start from scratch each time – saving time, money, and minimising development risk. It enables aircraft manufacturers to adopt simplified aircraft system architectures and facilitates weight (fuel) savings.

Smiths Aerospace, a part of Smiths Group, is a leading transatlantic aerospace systems and equipment company, with more than 11,000 employees and $2 billion revenues globally. The company holds key positions in the supply chains of all major military and civil aircraft and engine manufacturers and is a world-leader in digital, electrical power, mechanical systems, engine components and Systems Customer Services. www.geaviationsystems.com
