Smiths Aerospace awarded contract for KC-10 upgrade study

Grand Rapids, MI – The United States Air Force Aeronautical Systems Center has awarded Smiths Aerospace a contract for a Concept Refinement Study for the KC-10 Aircraft Modernization (AMP) worth $1.3 million. The KC-10 AMP program calls for upgrading the fleet's avionics to meet Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) requirements and will also include other airframe related upgrades.

Smiths’ experience as an avionics and aerial refueling leader and integrator will provide a substantial operations and technology cornerstone for the Air Force KC-10 study and subsequent requirements definition. Smiths supplies similar technologies for the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program and the Boeing KC-767.

Results of the study will provide industry's perspective on potential acquisition approaches, strategies and diverse technical options for execution of the program. The KC-10 AMP contract award is expected in March 2008.

Smiths Aerospace, a part of Smiths Group, is a leading transatlantic aerospace equipment and systems company, with more than $2 billion sales and 11,000 employees globally. Smiths holds key positions in the supply chains on all major military and civil aircraft and engine manufacturers. Strategically organized businesses focus on digital, electrical power and mechanical systems, engine components and Systems Customer Services.
