Fault Tolerant Computing and Control Systems

GE engineers and manufactures fault-tolerant Vehicle Management Computers (VMC) that range from strictly digital computer systems in Distributed System architectures, to hybrid designs that include signal acquisition/generation functions and actuator control electronics embedded in the physically redundant control units.

GE' Model 2970A1 VMC is a highly reliable, fault-tolerant computing system that employs a high-performance cross-channel data network for safety-critical guidance, navigation, and flight control applications. The physical redundancy is scaled from dual (fail safe) to quad-modular redundant (double fail operational) without changing hardware or software. The open VME architecture and the time and space-partitioned operating system simplify the integration of remote input/output units and actuator control electronics. An embedded, intelligent network gateway adapts the central computers to the vehicle-specific data bus/enterprise network technology:

  • IEEE 1394b

  • 10/100 BaseT Ethernet

  • MIL-STD-1553B

  • RS-232, 422, and 485
